Most people agree that Le Griffon was the first European ship to disappear in the Great Lakes.
In order to obtain furs and other supplies from nearby tribes, Le Griffon embarked on its first journey into the Great Lakes in 1679 and eventually reached an island in Lake Michigan.
This worked, but Le Griffon never made it home, disappearing in the vicinity of Green Bay on Lake Michigan.
A shipwreck hunter and his spouse thought they had located the Le Griffon’s wreck in 2018. However, 345 years after the enigmatic disappearance, the truth has yet to be revealed due to a lack of solid evidence.
The Thomas Hume disappearance (1891)
The schooner Thomas Hume is involved in one of the most well-known episodes of an unexplained disappearance in the Lake Michigan Triangle. After discharging a shipment of lumber, the ship sailed from Chicago to Muskegon, Michigan, in May 1891.
A storm formed on the lake during the trip. The Thomas Hume was a strong vessel that had already weathered numerous storms.
As the mystery surrounding the Lake Michigan Triangle grew, there was a great deal of conjecture regarding the fate of the Thomas Hume since, in spite of intensive searches, no evidence of the wreckage, debris, or crew was found.

The unsettling disappearance of Flight 2501
The loss of Northwest Airlines flight 2501 is another noteworthy enigma related to the Lake Michigan Triangle. Captain Robert Lind, two other crew members, and fifty-five passengers sailed from New York to Seattle on June 23, 1950.
Storms were forming as the jet flew over Lake Michigan. Air traffic control granted Captain Lind’s request for a 4,000-foot cruising altitude because he was worried about the storms that were in his route.
As the turbulence increased, Lind was told to descend to 3500 feet in order to prevent colliding with another aircraft, and he did so. They would reach Milwaukee by 11:37 p.m., Lind radioed. But before the aircraft vanished forever, this was the captain’s final radio message.
No wreckage was ever discovered, even after a thorough search. Days later, only human remains and little fragments of wreckage came ashore.
74 years later, the whereabouts of the plane and its exact fate are still unknown mysteries surrounding Lake Michigan’s Triangle.
