A statement from the city of Las Cruces states that seniors will have to modify their December lunch plans. For some much-needed renovations, the dining room at the Frank O. Brien Papen Community Center will be temporarily closed. In particular, the dining room will be closed from December 2 to December 17 as workers replace the deteriorating floor. Fortunately, the service outage won’t last long because the facility will reopen on December 18 in time to start serving meals again. Senior services will not be offered at the facility throughout the construction phase, according to the city’s complete statement.
The city isn’t abandoning its elderly citizens, though. Those impacted by the shutdown will have access to alternate dining options. Seniors can still join for lunch in a number of local places around the city, such as Munson Senior Center, Eastside Center, Henry Benavidez Center, and Sage Caf, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The City of Las Cruces claims that the notification included the whole list of alternative dining locations.
Those who depend on Las Cruces Dial-A-Ride transportation services are also supported. During the dining room shutdown, the city advises anybody who needs help arranging transportation to other dining venues to contact 575-528-3000 and request to talk with a case manager. Dial-A-Ride is a service that helps those with mobility problems, such as many elders in the community, to continue having access to necessary services.
