Las Vegas Braces for Mixed Weather with Rain and Snow Predicted as Weekend Approaches

As the weekend draws near, the Las Vegas area may expect a range of weather conditions, according to a forecast released by the National Weather Service in Las Vegas. The week will begin with a mix of mid- to high-level clouds, and locals can anticipate dry weather with a gradual warming trend. But as the weekend approaches, there’s a greater likelihood of precipitation, with rain and mountain snow being the main forecast outcomes, particularly in the Sierra.

The National Weather Service’s most recent forecast indicates that Friday night will signal a change in weather patterns, with winds starting to noticeably increase over higher terrain. Additionally, rain and snow are predicted to move into areas of Esmeralda and Inyo counties. As the upper-level ridge breaks down, a deep low/trough from the NE Pacific will be able to slowly travel southward and bring an atmospheric river into play, potentially ending the calm weather stretch this weekend.

By Saturday, precipitation will begin to hit western areas of Inyo and Esmeralda counties, according to the National Weather Service. However, the vast bulk of the region is expected to remain dry, with less than a 20% chance of precipitation. On Sunday, however, things change as the likelihood of rain increases eastward, with a 20–60% chance of precipitation by the afternoon for the whole region.

Although there is less than a 30% possibility of substantial rainfall in the majority of valley sites, the likelihood of an impact increases among the mountains. Over 7000 feet, there is a 25–75% risk of at least minor winter impacts in the Sierra and White Mountains. According to the National Weather Service, there is a 40–70% possibility of gusts exceeding 40 mph in some areas this weekend. Temperatures are therefore expected to rise on Saturday, reaching highs of 2 to 8 degrees above average before progressively falling back to near or below average levels on Sunday and Tuesday.

Aviation-wise, Harry Reid International Airport’s prediction calls for light diurnal wind patterns to persist during the time, with a change to southwest winds after sunset. The sky will clear by night, but there will be sporadic clouds at 20,000 feet through the afternoon. Travelers and aviation personnel may expect increased wind gusts and precipitation chances from Saturday into Monday.

With the exception of slightly breezy winds predicted at Bishop Airport (KBIH) this afternoon, similar light and diurnal wind patterns will continue into tomorrow for areas outside of the Las Vegas area, such as southeastern California and northwest Arizona. Spotters and the public are encouraged to observe regular working standards and be informed about meteorological conditions in other areas.
