Last Two Suspects in Nashville’s Jefferson Street Shooting Now in Custody; Charged with Aggravated Assault and Gun Crimes

Ending weeks of intensive manhunt efforts, Nashville authorities apprehended Corey D. Johnson, 31, and Kiyahn Hayes-Woods, 23, the last two suspects in the grievous Jefferson Street shooting that unfolded on October 12, claiming one life and leaving nine injured. In a controlled operation, detectives from the Specialized Investigations Division TITANS took the men into custody on Berry Street, according to a

Nashville Police Department release

. During the arrest, Hayes-Woods was found in possession of a semi-automatic pistol.

An investigation has since revealed that the deadly incident was the result of an exchange of gunfire between rival gang factions, erupting in violence shortly after 5 p.m. at the intersection of 27th Avenue North and Jefferson Street. The confrontation proved fatal for Vonquae Johnson, 24, who succumbed to his injuries at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Both Corey Johnson and Hayes-Woods were there with Vonquae Johnson, their affiliations pointing towards a deeper narrative of gang rivalry and street justice.

Accusations against Corey Johnson include aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and felony reckless endangerment, with his bond set at $80,000. Hayes-Woods faces charges of felony reckless endangerment and unlawful gun possession by a convicted felon, his bond marked slightly higher at $94,000. Prior arrests of Marquez Davis and DeAnthony Brown on October 14 suggest the gravity and breadth of this case, both 24-year-old suspects charged with criminal homicide for Vonquae Johnson’s death and Davis further facing a federal charge for gun possession as a convicted felon.
