When we hear about a murder that happens close to where we live, we all watch the news with fear and shock. It’s natural to feel uneasy when there is a murder nearby, but overall, your neighborhood is probably safe.

We used Saturday Night Science to compare the FBI crime data on murders for the 31 cities in Virginia with over 5,000 residents. This helped us find the cities in Virginia with the most murders and the highest murder rates per capita.

Method to Calculate the Murder Capitals of Virginia

We wanted to use something more reliable than speculation and opinion to determine which cities in a state are the most dangerous, so we looked at surveys and public polls. Instead, we used Saturday Night Science to compare the actual numbers from the FBI’s most recent report. We specifically examined the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report, which provides a yearly summary of the number of murders in each city.

We examined all the cities in Virginia for which FBI data was available in the most recent FBI Crime In The United States report. We had 31 cities left to rank.

We used the number of murders per person as the basis for ranking. Petersburg has the highest number of murders per person according to the latest data. This is the tenth time we are ranking the places in Virginia with the highest number of murders per capita. We have made changes to the list for the year 2024.
