Lawrenceville Celebrates Diversity with Spanish-Language “Love Lawrenceville Day” for Local Students

With an extensive Spanish-language event aimed at embracing and involving the city’s Spanish-speaking pupils, Lawrenceville has taken a big step toward diversity. Known as “Love Lawrenceville Day,” the occasion was recently organized by the City of Lawrenceville and Students46. Students from Gwinnett County’s International Transition Center (ITC) were the target audience for this special edition of this community-focused event, which gave them firsthand knowledge of local government and employment opportunities.

Mayor David Still praised the idea in a statement that was received by the official website of the City of Lawrenceville, saying, “Love Lawrenceville Day reflects our City’s commitment to inclusivity and opportunity for all who call Lawrenceville home.” In fact, 27 students spent the day observing experts in a variety of local agencies, with the assistance of bilingual workers to help them better comprehend the daily operations.

According to the city’s website, one of the highlights of the day was a three-hour business-shadowing experience that gave the ITC students a chance to see positions in the Lawrenceville Police Department, Public Works, and City Hall. The presence of important city authorities who greeted the young participants and stoked their curiosity, as well as ITC Principal Dr. Steve Frandsen, who provided translation services for the children, enhanced these encounters.

A luncheon with food from the neighborhood restaurant La Cazuela Lawrenceville was held at the Police Department as a result of the enthusiastic reception and participation. A panel discussion with notable Hispanic community leaders, such as Captain Salvador Ortega of the Lawrenceville Police Department and Oscar Lievano, owner of America’s Benefit Center, was held in conjunction with the meal. By interacting with these individuals, students were able to acquire important knowledge about the varied professional environment of the community.

Along with additional funding from CASA, the Latin American Association, and other local initiatives, organizations like See Beautiful and the Thumann Foundation have played a crucial role in making the 2024 Love Lawrenceville Day a reality. “Love Lawrenceville Day continues to inspire local students by creating meaningful experiences that connect them to their community and workforce pipelines and foster a sense of belonging,” said Jen Young, Executive Director of Impact46, who expressed her delight with the event’s results. According to the City of Lawrenceville, Discovery and Central Gwinnett High Schools will be taking part in more Love Lawrenceville Day events in the forthcoming school year.
