An off-duty Marion County paramedic is credited with saving the life of a driver stuck in a flaming vehicle on Interstate 75 on Tuesday morning, according to a press release.
Around 7 a.m., Marion County Fire Rescue responded to a car crash near Exit 341 on I-75’s northbound lanes.
Critical care paramedic Stephen Cabrera, who was off duty and on his way to work at the time, “sprang into action,” according to the announcement.
MCFR officials stated that when another person smashed the vehicle’s window, Cabrera opened the door, cut the airbags and seatbelt, and dragged the driver out and away from the flames.
Cabrera offered life-saving care until fire rescue crews arrived, according to the statement.
According to MCFR, firefighters extinguished the fire while paramedics stabilized the patient and brought them to the hospital on a trauma alert.
“The decisive actions of Critical Care Paramedic Cabrera exemplify courage and dedication, and undoubtedly saved a life today. Thank you for your selfless service!” the release concluded.
Officials declined to provide any additional details about the driver’s health. Officials said the reason of the crash is still being investigated.
