Logs, tires and other debris removed from clogged sewer pipe along Macomb County street

(CBS Detroit) Clinton Township, MichiganThe ongoing flooding issue was resolved when the Macomb County Public Works Commission removed a significant obstruction in the storm sewage system.

Logs, railroad ties, tires, and other objects were found to have slowed the Teske Drain’s flow to a trickle during inspections.

Trinity Fotion remarked, “When it rains, this area of Kelly Road is like an ocean.”

The significant flooding was caused by the bottleneck, but officials believe it was made worse by decaying infrastructure.

“I think it was the worst in all the years I’ve been public works commissioner,” stated Candice S. Miller, the commissioner of public works. “In order for the water to flow, we must ensure that (the systems) are maintained. We are quite pleased with this project.

Because of the age of the pipes, officials said the issue was a bit more problematic than they had first thought.

A contractor vacuumed a 100-foot piece of the subterranean pipe to clear the muck, and debris that obstructed the concrete pipe was removed through a manhole close to the Canadian National train tracks south of 15 Mile Road. The stormwater level fell three feet shortly after the huge material was cleared away.

In an open-channel section of the Teske Drain adjacent to the railroad tracks, overgrown vegetation that impeded the flow was also removed. In order to stop erosion, the drain banks were subsequently graded and protected with limestone.

The county is working on a number of additional projects, including subterranean infrastructure, officials tell CBS News Detroit. Although a precise date is not yet known, they anticipate that many will be finished soon.
