The Long Beach Health Department has secured an $8 million grant to fund critical services for individuals involved in nonviolent offenses, with a particular eye on those grappling with mental health and substance use issues. The grant, originating from the Board of State and Community Corrections, is set to underpin the launch and operation of the Long Beach Reentry Service and Diversion Program through to the year 2028, according to theCity of Long Beach. This initiative represents a significant investment in community-based strategies aimed at reducing re-offense rates and providing supportive pathways for those entangled in the justice system.
The ambition of the new program, Mayor Rex Richardson stated, “By providing key support services, we can reduce recidivism, reducing crime while providing a second chance for those who are justice-involved.” As unveiled by theCity of Long Beach, the program’s objectives include streamlining the coordination of mental and substance use treatment, formulating youth-focused programming, and enhancing service connections for women involved in the justice system.
In the vein of comprehensive support, offerings span individual and group therapy sessions to psychiatric medication management. Moreover, the program will extend its reach to services such as case management, educational and employment assistance, housing connections, legal support, and even tattoo removal, as detailed by theCity of Long Beach. Health Department Director Alison King emphasized the drive to harness the power of partnerships and to cast these services through a trauma-informed and culturally responsive lens.
