Long Beach Police Arrest Suspect in Series of Sexual Assaults, Seek Additional Victims

Long Beach detectives have apprehended a man linked to several sex crimes spanning a decade, and they are now urging other potential victims to come forward. The Long Beach Police Department has announced the arrest of Melvin Aaron Johnson Jr, a 34-year-old from Long Beach, suspected in a series of sexual assaults. According to their

press release

, investigators have tied Johnson to multiple incidents, including a forcible lewd act against a minor in April 2014, and various sexual assaults against adults and minors from May 2024 through October 2024.

Johnson’s arrest followed a thorough investigation by the Sex Crimes detectives, who have indicated that he used a firearm to commit several of the crimes. The LBPD detailed that he faces charges, ranging from forcible lewd acts against a child under age 14 to possession of a firearm by a felon, with bail set at $3,560,000. The police are also looking to quickly identify additional victims who may have yet to report their encounters with the suspect.

The investigation has further revealed that Johnson is a person of interest in additional sexual assault cases in areas beyond Long Beach, including the jurisdiction of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department and across state lines in Nevada. The LBPD took Johnson into custody without incident on Oct. 30, 2024, and he was subsequently booked into the Long Beach City Jail. In a statement obtained by the Long Beach government’s official website, police elucidated the various charges, including sexual battery and sexual assault with intent to commit a felony.

As authorities continue to unravel the full extent of Johnson’s alleged criminal activities, the call for other victims to step forward has become paramount to the case.
