LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Terry Pyatt of Lafayette and her GMC Acadia were the victims of a seven-car accident Thursday afternoon near Indiana 26 and Tippecanoe County Road 550 East.
Pyatt, 64, was taken to an Indianapolis hospital for her injuries following the incident and was still in serious condition Friday, according to a Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Department news release.
According to the press release, the chain reaction crash began when Kelley Gray of Lafayette was westbound in her Toyota and swerved left of center, clipping the side mirror of another westbound automobile waiting to turn left at the junction. The driver is only identified as a juvenile.
Gray’s car subsequently collided with Tara Pepprock’s southbound minivan, which was about to turn eastward onto Indiana 26, according to the news release.
Gray then broadsided Pyatt’s southbound Acadia, colliding with an eastbound pickup truck driven by Nicholas Smith of Lafayette, according to the news release. Smith’s truck was pushed backward into another eastbound pickup truck operated by Oliver King of Lafayette.
According to the news release, Gray and Pyatt’s automobiles collided with a seventh vehicle, driven by a juvenile.
Pyatt was extricated from her Acadia by firefighters before being transported to IU Health Arnett Hospital by paramedics. Pyatt was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital for treatment.
Gray was transported to IU Health Arnett for treatment, according to the press release.
The other drivers were all medically examined and treated on the scene, according to the news release. According to the news release, deputies stopped the junction for more than two hours to recreate the crash.
