One man was injured last night after a shooting on Long Beach’s Elm Avenue turned from a physical confrontation into a gun violence incident. According to the Long Beach Police Department, officers were called to the 600 block of Elm Avenue at approximately 10:23 p.m. on November 21 after receiving reports of a shooting. When the LBPD arrived, they discovered a male victim who had been shot in the upper torso, but the wound was deemed non-life-threatening, according to their blotter.
The victim received immediate medical assistance at a nearby hospital thanks to the Long Beach Fire Department’s swift arrival on the scene. After contacting a number of subjects, the LBPD’s preliminary findings revealed that the victim and male companions were engaged in a fight with another group of males that descended into violence when the suspect opened fire on the first group.
Police were able to apprehend the suspected shooter at the spot following the event. He was identified as Long Beach resident Angel Jiovanni Pheang-Chavez, 19. After being taken to Long Beach City jail and charged with one count of attempted murder, Pheang-Chavez was jailed. The LBPD stated that his bail was set at $1,000,000.
