On Tuesday night, a man was shot dead inside a nearby convenience store in Northeast Charlotte, setting off a somber scene. Sharrieff Ellis Gray, 52, has already been taken into custody by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department in relation to the murder.
Ronnie Leon Ruth, 53, was discovered dead at the Fast Mart on Tom Hunter Road at around 5:30 p.m., when police were summoned to the scene. Members of the community were astonished and dismayed by the quick act of violence that was witnessed. According to a WSOCTV report, Major J.D. Thomas said, “It was a very quick entry, and just an immediate act of violence, and left the area.”
With the help of the Violent Criminal Apprehension squad (VCAT) and SWAT squad, Gray was captured and charged with murder two days after the incident. According to WBTV, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has stressed that this is still an ongoing investigation and asked anyone with information to come forward and call them at 704-432-TIPS.
In a statement obtained by WCCB Charlotte, Major Thomas described the shooting as a “Just very brazen, violent act that happened inside,” raising questions about the motivation behind the incident. According to police, there was no prior altercation or assault prior to the shooting, and robbery did not seem to be a motive. Major J.D. Thomas stated in an interview that it was merely a terrible incident and that there did not seem to have been an altercation inside the store that preceded it.
Thomas stated that they had “a high likelihood of identifying the suspect due to the video quality,” which is why surveillance footage was so important in the suspect’s identification, according to WSCOCTV.
Law enforcement is still trying to piece together the circumstances of the occurrence as the neighborhood is still in shock. More information regarding the potential relationship between Gray and Ruth or the circumstances surrounding such an abrupt act of violence has not been made public by authorities.
