Man in Critical Condition After Being Struck in Pedestrian Crash in Southgate

A guy is in stable but critical condition following a pedestrian collision in Southgate on Monday night. The Detroit News reports that the guy was struck by a car as he crossed the street inside a crosswalk at approximately 5:15 p.m. close to the junction of Trenton Road and Eureka. After the collision, police arrived on the scene.

According to information posted on social media by the City of Southgate Police Department, the guy was hit while crossing Trenton Road by a car that was apparently turning into the southbound lane from a parking lot. The driver, who stayed at the scene and waited for the police to arrive after the collision, showed no symptoms of intoxication.

The Downriver Crash Team assisted authorities in continuing their investigations. According to Detroit News, recent data from the Michigan State Police shows an alarming trend: pedestrian-related collisions increased 11% from 1,897 in 2021 to 2,114 in 2023. They attest to the terrible increase in pedestrian fatalities.

Additionally, compared to the prior year, the number of pedestrian deaths increased by 6%, from 173 to 183.
