A New York man is incarcerated for allegedly killing his niece and three nephews when he slowed his car down in the middle of a highway to take pictures of the Florida Welcomes You sign.

The Florida Highway Patrol stated Wednesday that Marvin Redondo-Funes, 25, is charged with four counts of aggravated homicide of a child and driving while his license is suspended or revoked causing serious bodily injury. According to a criminal complaint, in July 2023, Redondo-Funes took his fiancée and their four kids on a vacation from New York to Florida. Redondo-Funes was traveling along Interstate 95 close to the Georgia-Florida border at approximately 4 a.m. on July 1.

Redondo-Funes allegedly slowed the car to just 1 or 2 miles per hour so that he could take a picture when he and the group got closer to the Florida Welcomes You sign. According to FHP officials, the automobile behind them failed to notice him braking and crashed into the rear of Redondo-Funes’ car.

On the highway, there is a 70 mph speed limit and a 40 mph minimum.

According to reports, Redondo-Funes’ four children were seated in the back seat, which was only intended to accommodate three people. According to troopers, three of the children were also not wearing seatbelts. Three of the youngsters were declared dead by paramedics at the site, while a fourth was taken to the hospital. Two days after the collision, doctors declared the youngster dead. The youngsters’ names have been removed from the report.

Redondo-Funes acknowledged operating the vehicle, according to troopers. Police said that a court ruling had suspended his license. Neither he nor his girlfriend were seriously hurt. Additionally, the other driver was unharmed.

The children were 10, 12, and two 14-year-olds, according to the AGoFundMe accounts. Miami was their destination.

On November 2, Redondo-Funes was extradited back to Florida after being apprehended by police in New York. On a $270,016 bond, he is still being held at the Nassau County Jail.

Troops commented on X that a picture is never worth a human life.
