Manhattan DA Charges Man with Assault on 77-Year-Old Woman in Upper West Side Daytime Incident

A harsh reminder of the unforeseen threats that might lurk in broad daylight on city streets was recently announced when Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg Jr. indicted a man for allegedly assaulting an elderly woman on the Upper West Side. According to a statement from the District Attorney’s Office, Anthony Melendez, 38, is charged with hitting the 77-year-old in an act that was both unjustified and violent.

According to court documents and official statements, the incident occurred on September 13 when the victim, a woman going about her day, ran into Melendez on her way back from the grocery store at approximately 2:05 p.m. Melendez was reportedly walking towards her with a rolling suitcase and a large plastic bag in his hands when he struck her in the head without provocation. The punch was powerful enough to knock her glasses off her face and drop them onto the street. In an act of kindness, one of the witnesses got her spectacles and made sure she was sent home safely.

Melendez faces one count each of assault in the second and third degrees, with a particular emphasis on public safety and the responsibility of those who compromise it. DA Bragg confirmed that Manhattanites should feel safe on New York streets and that those who endanger their safety will face consequences. He also underlined the significance of security in routine interactions on our city’s sidewalks, as explained by the District Attorney’s Office.

Under the direction of Assistant D.A. Charles Whitt and Executive Assistant D.A. Lisa DelPizzo, a dedicated team aims to navigate the pursuit of justice for the victim who is left to bear the physical and psychological repercussions of this attack. Melendez was arrested on August 19 and the DA’s office noted that the suitcase he had with him at the time of the attack was with him at the time of apprehension.
