Maricopa’s Citizen Leadership Academy Celebrates 24th Graduating Class, Eyes on Community Involvement

The most recent set of citizens, equipped with fresh perspectives and opportunities for civic involvement, just joined the municipal government of Maricopa. The Maricopa Citizen Leadership Academy celebrated its 24th graduating class at a recent City Council meeting, bringing the total number of residents who have received its life-changing education since its founding in 2009 to close to 400. The Academy aims to encourage community involvement while educating people about the inner workings of local government.

The curriculum, which takes place over four weekly evening sessions and is intended to give Maricopa residents a close-up look at the city’s forays into public safety, regional issues, and economic development, requires participants to either complete 90 minutes of community service or observe one city board or commission meeting to graduate. Devin Pitcher, one of the Academy’s most recent alumni, said, “I learned a lot attending these sessions, and it was an amazing experience.” Maricopa’s official release said, “I sincerely wish they were longer because I want to learn so much more.”

Devin Pitcher and other recent graduates add to the total of over 395 citizens who have benefited from the program. In addition to the mandatory service or meeting attendance, participants must attend at least three of the four sessions in order to create informed and involved citizens. This most recent cadre consists of twenty-one people who are prepared to apply classroom learning to actual community impact.

“If you’ve ever wondered how businesses choose to come to our city, how many police and fire employees are needed, and the overall financial health of Maricopa, those questions and more get answered at the Citizen Leadership Academy,” said Mayor Nancy Smith, who praised the initiative’s role in community enlightenment.
