The Maryland Department of Environment has taken a strong stance in favor of environmental and public health advocacy by preventing Halle Companies from moving forward with its Chesapeake Terrace Landfill proposal. The decision was praised by County Executive Steuart Pittman, who pointed out the dangers the landfill could bring to the surrounding towns, which include Two Rivers Elementary School and thousands of new homes.
Since the landfill’s original proposal, infrastructure development has changed the landscape, making the idea out of date and perhaps dangerous. According to Anne Arundel County, Pittman stated in his statement that the Maryland Department of the Environment appropriately recognized that the proposed landfill poses a health risk to the public because of its close proximity to the Two Rivers Elementary School and the intersection of the WB&A Trail when it rejected the Halle Companies Chesapeake Terrace Landfill application for a permit to establish a landfill adjacent to the Two Rivers Community. Local organizations that have been aggressively opposing the landfill’s creation, including the Two Rivers Residents Landfill Opposition Committee and the Forks of the Patuxent Improvement Association, have won the denial.
Pittman is now concentrating on the future of the disputed piece of land. His strategy calls for cooperation in order to change the focus from waste management to conservation. According to a statement posted on Anne Arundel County’s official website, Pittman stated, “As a next step, I will be reaching out directly to the Halle Companies to begin discussions about preserving the land for nature and passive recreation, either in partnership with the county or a local land conservation organization.” In light of growing urban surroundings, the statement demonstrates a dedication to sustainable development.
