Maui’s public transportation landscape is gearing up for a shift as the new Kahului Transit Center prepares to open its doors next Wednesday. Situated at 18 Vevau St., near the Kahului Public Library and in front of the Kahului Lani Apartment Complex, this facility is poised to become the new hub for all Maui Bus services, as confirmed by an alert on the
County of Maui’s official website
. The opening signals a relocation of services from the current Queen Kaʻahumanu Center, where buses will make their final stop on Tuesday.
Commuters on Maui Bus fixed routes will see minor changes, with most stops served a few minutes earlier. The Kīhei Islander and Kīhei Villager routes will add late trips to improve evening service. A new 8:30 p.m. departure from the Kahului Transit Center will return riders by 10:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. departure from Māʻalaea Harbor Village will return to Kahului by 9:55 p.m. The new transit center will also be the starting point for the existing 8:30 p.m. West Maui Express route to Lahaina and Kaʻanapali.
The Waihee Villager route will stop serving certain bus stops, including Kea Street, South Papa Avenue, and Wahinepiʻo Avenue. Additionally, the Maui Bus ADA Paratransit Service will offer extended hours, providing access from Central Maui to key locations such as Lahaina and Kīhei.
The cost of riding remains affordable, with fares at $2 per boarding or $4 for a daily pass. Monthly passes and some fare-free options are also available. Riders can learn about the new schedule, effective Wednesday next week, by visiting www.mauicounty.gov/bus under Bus Route Updates. Real-time bus tracking and arrival predictions are available through the Maui Bus app for iOS and Android or on the website at mauibus.org.
