The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority recently released “MBTA Go,” a new live monitoring app that is currently available for iPhone users who utilize Boston’s transit system, as part of an effort to improve the passenger experience. According to Boston.com, the app gives customers real-time information “in the palm of your hand,” such as arrival times, bus and train positions, and any service interruptions, as explained by Phil Eng, general manager of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority.
Android users can anticipate downloading the app in February of next year, which is seen as another step toward a fully integrated transit network made possible by digital technology. Eng also highlighted the app’s value in making it easier for visitors and residents to navigate the public transportation system because it easily shows service alternatives during scheduled outages and where shuttle buses are available. Transportation Secretary Monica Tibbits-Nutt echoed this point, arguing that passengers’ decisions and travel efficiency can be empowered by this information, according to Boston.com.
The “MBTA Go” experience is undoubtedly based on language inclusivity; to accommodate Boston’s diverse population, the app supports a number of languages, including Spanish, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Portuguese, Haitian Creole, and Vietnamese. Additionally, “MBTA Go” has an interactive map that shows available services and transfer options at all T stops.
