Gold Meadow Dairies With roughly 200 workers impacted, Hawaii, a mainstay of the state’s dairy industry since 1897, has announced significant layoffs across many islands. The layoffs, according to KHON2, coincide with the company’s intention to stop running its own distribution and storage businesses. By collaborating with Pacific Provisions Hawaii and the Hawaii Foodservice Alliance, Meadow Gold hopes to increase value-added manufacturing and local production.
According to the same KHON2 article, the layoffs are expected to start in January and affect 49 personnel on Oahu, 24 in Hilo, 19 in Kahului, and seven on Kauai.
According to Hawaii News Now, in addition to one singing costume character, the layoffs also affect positions ranging from salespeople to drivers.
For its soon-to-be former employees, Meadow Gold has stated its dedication to ensuring a seamless transition. In order to better support Hawaii’s dairy industry, we gave it considerable thought before deciding to stop running our own distribution and warehousing operations and instead concentrate on growing local production and funding value-added local manufacturing. Although this is a big change, we think it’s essential to improve our long-term capacity to provide high-quality products and maintain the standards Hawaii deserves while bringing the island state closer to greater sustainability and boosting our capacity to continue manufacturing locally,” the company said in a statement that Khon2 was able to obtain.
Although the company’s history in Oahu dates back more than a century, its milk processing activities there came to an end in 2020. “We look forward to this partnership to create a more sustainable future for local families by aligning our interests toward a common goal,” said Meadow Gold in a statement given to Khon2. There has been no response to questions posed to the unions that represent some of the employees. According to Meadow Gold Dairies, these structural adjustments will improve their long-term capacity to produce high-quality goods and bring Hawaii one step closer to sustainability and local food production self-sufficiency.
