Measles Case Diagnosed at Windermere Elementary in Pflugerville, Health Officials Seek to Contain Spread

On Thursday, the Pflugerville Independent School District’s Windermere Elementary School informed parents that one of their students had been diagnosed with measles. The PfISD Health Office sent out a letter containing the information, characterizing measles as a “highly contagious but rare respiratory infection,” according to KXAN. Both the Texas Department of State Health Services and Austin Public Health had no confirmed cases on file, despite the district’s declaration.

Despite trying to reassure, district officials are said to say they do not expect any more instances because Texas requires measles vaccinations for students to enter schools. However, there may be exceptions in which families choose not to vaccinate their children. According to KVUE, no precise information about the student’s condition has been made public.

Measles is known to be transmitted via coughing or sneezing, which releases virus-laden droplets into the atmosphere. A full-body skin rash and flu-like symptoms like fever, cough, and runny nose are among the symptoms that can linger for around two weeks. Dr. Elizabeth Knapp, associate chief of pediatrics at Austin Regional Clinic, told KXAN regarding how residents should react to possible exposure: “If your child was exposed and they are protected against their measles vaccine, then you really don’t have much to worry about.”

According to the district, they must inform every family on campus. According to data that KVUE was able to get, Texas health care professionals are required to notify their local health department—or, in the absence of a local department, the DSHS regional office—of any suspected measles cases right away. How quickly and completely these notifications are made will determine how well this incident is contained.

A list of early signs, such as a high fever, Koplik’s spots inside the mouth, and a hacking cough, that precede a measles rash, was provided by the PfISD Health Office. In addition, recovery procedures were recommended. The district advised affected youngsters to use a “cool mist vaporizer,” drink a lot of clear drinks, and get “extra rest.” According to district norms, children can resume school seven to ten days after the fever and rash have gone down.
