Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation is taking the initiative to make the beautiful outdoors more accessible to all. New all-terrain wheelchairs (ATWs) are being introduced to help residents with impairments enjoy outdoor activities. These specifically made wheelchairs are ready to tackle a range of terrains, so uneven paths won’t be a hindrance to taking advantage of nature’s abundance.
The county’s larger effort to encourage diversity in recreation includes these ATWs. Leslie Johnson, deputy County manager and temporary director of Park and Recreation, told MeckNC that one of our main goals is to provide equal access to recreational options. The department’s goal is for locals of all abilities to enjoy the recreational and therapeutic advantages of being surrounded by green spaces.
These ATWs will be available starting Monday, giving people who may have previously thought the journey into nature’s embrace would be impossible a fresh lease on life. Residents have the right to use an ATW once a day, Monday through Friday, for up to three hours.
Reservations are currently being accepted for this service over the phone or in person at any of the five Park & Recreation locations. Mecklenburg County’s commitment to inclusion and improving the quality of life for all of its citizens is demonstrated by the ATWs, which are built to withstand a variety of outdoor settings. Johnson confirmed this commitment in a statement that MeckNC news was able to receive.
