According to official comments issued today, the Memphis Police Department (MPD) has closed the Economy Hotel located at 3896 Lamar Ave. because of an increase in criminal activity that made it a public nuisance. Following a temporary injunction granted by the court yesterday, the closure was enforced by MPD’s Organized Crime Unit (OCU) at around 10 a.m., according to a thorough report on law enforcement actions published by Local Memphis.
Between August 2022 and August 2024, officers were called nearly a thousand times in response to a long list of occurrences that included violent assaults, drug deals, robberies, and fatalities. FOX13 Memphis reported the hotel’s sobering statistics: 996 calls were handled by the MPD, and 172 offense reports were submitted.
According to FOX13 Memphis, the MPD painstakingly gathered evidence of the various crimes committed at this site and sent it to the Shelby County Attorney General’s Office, which ultimately resulted to the motel being declared a public nuisance by the court. A variety of criminal activities were seen during the two-year inquiry, including homicides, drug sales, gang activity, and 41 arrests connected to the establishment.
