Mesa Woman Charged with Animal Cruelty for Torturing, Killing Dogs

Mesa Police have disclosed that a 42-year-old Mesa woman named Brook Scalero is facing numerous charges of animal cruelty following claims that she killed and tortured multiple dogs. Her arrest last week has drawn significant criticism. This horrifying finding was made possible by Scalero’s journal, which detailed the torture and killing of her roommate’s dog among other animals, according to a report by FOX 10 Phoenix.

Scalero’s contact information was included in the journal, which was left behind with other personal belongings after she was kicked out of her apartment. It described the abuse of twelve dogs and the deaths of five. The journal’s existence was first made public when her ex-roommate gave it to the police after their dog, Gus, died while in Scalero’s care—a case that the AZ Family called heartbreaking. Interestingly, the journal also referenced a 3-year-old Maltese mix named Pepe, who was acquired from Paws Fur the Cause and was later discovered dead. A microchip verified that Pepe was the victim of Scalero’s alleged activities. During an arrest on unrelated charges, Scalero first claimed the journal’s accounts were just “creative writings” when police inquired about the notebook.

A section concerning the physical abuse of a 14-month-old infant was also published in the journal, although the specifics of this allegation are yet unknown. Griffin, a dead dog registered to Scalero with injuries consistent with animal abuse, was discovered at the VCA Animal Hospital on October 5 after the Mesa Police responded to an incident there.

The accusations have infuriated the community; Sydney Pileggi discovered Pepe’s body after reading a distressing journal that was shared on social media. “It was quite depressing. It’s a heartbreaking story,” Pileggi told AZ Family. Scalero admitted to her involvement in the dogs’ deaths after being questioned further. Authorities now charge her with one misdemeanor count of stealing and two felonies of animal cruelty.
