Metro Detroit couple on frontlines of fight against COVID gets engaged

TROY, me. – Saaja Rayford has been working as a nurse in a COVID department in Beaumont Troy for more than a year.

Rayford was among the first Michigan health workers to receive the COVID vaccine.

“We are at the end of this tunnel. I can see the light, ”said Rayford.

Her friend Tyler Ashcroft is a nurse at the same hospital.

“She worked five 12-hour shifts a week, this was her day off,” said Ashcroft.

Ashcroft reached out to the owner of Tappers Diamonds and Fine Jewelry at the Somerset Collection Mall for an engagement ring.

“The story impressed me personally. Someone who’s had a really tough time and really gave something back on the front lines, ”said CEO Mark Tapper.

While the couple were at the mall to “meet friends for brunch,” they stopped at Tapper’s.

Suggested Ashcroft at the jewelry store. She said yes.
