Metro Detroiters brave long lines, cold temperatures to put final touches on Thanksgiving menus

CBS Detroit, Beverly Hills, Mich. The day before Thanksgiving is off for many folks in Southeast Michigan, but that doesn’t mean they’re not working.

For their Thanksgiving meal, a number of them took the time to collect those last-minute items.

Achatz Handmade Pies is working double duty on one of the busiest days of the year. In addition to stacking pies outdoors to fulfill online orders, the crew was also helping guests who had only remembered to bring dessert to the table on Thursday night.

“This Wednesday, just before 3 p.m., about 500 pumpkin pies were made. We’ll use all 500, then this afternoon we’ll get another truck with roughly 400 more. “On our own, we’ll make nearly 1,000 pumpkin pies,” stated Alex Matthews, general manager of Achatz.

Not to mention all the pies made with apples, pecans, and autumn harvest.

Thanksgiving involves more than just desserts, according to Matthews, who estimates that the Beverly Hills, Michigan, restaurant will see about 3,000 patrons.

Additionally, people braved the bitter cold on Wednesday morning, standing in line for up to 30 minutes to get the main dish at Ferndale’s The Honey Baked Ham Company.

“I know what I was getting into since I’ve gone down this path before. Since this is my day off and I have work on Monday and Tuesday, I believe it’s strategic. Everything is just set up appropriately. “So, I’m not stressed at all,” Rachel Chioreanu, a customer, stated.

Others are merely doing as they are told.

Harry Bullard’s response to the question of why he was there on Wednesday morning was, “The wife.”

A typical Thanksgiving in Detroit, according to Bullard, is about more than just what’s on your plate. What’s on screen is also important.

“Thank heavens we have a fantastic team this year; you have to see the Lions. With the Lions winning this year, the home will be a pleasant place,” he remarked.

As they play the Chicago Bears, the Lions are still looking for their first Thanksgiving victory since 2016.
