According to a recent report by the Metropolitan Council, municipal mayors, local council members, and planners are actively looking for solutions for families making less than 60% of the area median income. This indicates that the search for stable and affordable housing continues to be a top priority for the community. A component of Imagine 2050, a regional development guide, is the Met Council’s updated Housing Policy Plan, which aims to meet people’ requirements for stability, services, and vital cultural facilities in addition to affordability.
Cities have praised the plan for its clarity and straightforward approach that streamlines implementation while duly adhering to state law mandates. The updated plan pushes past the previous goals of the 2040 initiative and focuses on seven strategic objectives: equitable housing, a variety of ownership or rental options, quality standards, stability considerations, cultural connections, equity, and environmental justice and well-being. “We have heard back from cities that our focus is clear and concise, which works better for them,” the Metropolitan Council said in a statement highlighting the favorable response to the revised guidelines.
Beyond planning, the Met Council is involved, allocating funds like Livable Communities Act grants and infrastructure expenditures to support mixed-income communities and neighborhoods around the area. In June, the Met Council received a $4 million grant from the federal government expressly for removing obstacles to the creation of affordable homes, marking a major step forward. This money will support technical assistance, direct grants, policy and planning support, and the development of new affordable housing projects.
“Using Imagine 2050, we see ourselves continuing existing partnerships and cultivating new ones at all levels of government to ensure we are all rowing in the same direction,” the Met Council, as convener, said in an interview, describing the initiative as a means of strengthening current collaborations and creating new partnerships across government layers in order to forge a cohesive approach to regional housing challenges. In order to achieve the Council’s goal of a resilient, successful, and equitable area full of chances for every community member to thrive in their everyday lives, coordination of activities is essential.
