Miami Beach Security on High Alert After Deadly New Orleans Attack – Enhanced Patrols and Barriers for Public Safety

Even as sun, sand, sea, and south beach shopping are on everyone’s minds, whether they are on vacation or live in South Florida, the terror attack in New Orleans has many people frightened.

“It’s a scary thought,” said Britney Alberga, who is in Miami Beach. “I see a lot of cops and security, so I’m less worried. I am grateful for that.”

A man in a pick-up truck slammed through a crowd of people celebrating New Year’s Eve on Bourbon Street, killing more than a dozen and injuring dozens more.

The suspect was murdered during a gunfight with police. He reportedly drove onto the sidewalk to avoid a police car blocking the street. Lots of attention is now focused on the bollards, which are barriers designed to keep cars out.

Previous ones were useless and were being replaced.

Closer to home, Miami Beach police said officers are assessing “soft target” areas along Lincoln Road and Ocean Drive.

“We understand that many people are afraid,” said Officer Chris Bess of the Miami Beach Police Department. “We already have an infrastructure of delineators and barriers on Lincoln Road.”

Along with mobile barriers placed during special events, police said neighbors should expect increased manpower and patrols.

“We do understand that a lot of people are afraid,” Bess added. “Though there are no credible threats to our city at this time, we’re working with local and federal agencies to do intelligence assessments and go from there.”
