In a move to directly address the persistent affordable housing crisis, Miami-Dade County is laying the foundation for an expansion of affordable living spaces with the groundbreaking of Courtside II Apartments. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and District 3 Commissioner Keon Hardemon will mark the occasion on Friday, December 6, to officially commence the construction of the new affordable housing community.
The project, designed to somewhat alleviate the burden on low-to-moderate income families, will feature 120 units across two seven-story buildings, and aims to cater to individuals and families earning between 50% to 70% of the area median income. Each apartment is planned to include features such as Energy Star appliances and modern finishings. According to the
Miami-Dade County’s press release
, the development boasts amenities designed to enhance resident quality of life, including a fitness center and a dog park.
Emphasized in the press release is the commitment to not simply build homes, but to also support the community through on-site programs meant for literacy, financial, and employment assistance. With the goal of completing construction in early 2026, Courtside II Apartments hold the promise of becoming more than just a living space, but a springboard for personal development and empowerment.
Driving the project is a collaboration between NBA Hall of Famer Alonzo Mourning’s non-profit organization and the Housing Trust Group, with financially critical support from Miami-Dade County Public Housing and Community Development in the form of $2.5 million from Surtax funding and 30 project-based vouchers, which are destined to directly assist court-side in ensuring affordability for future residents. The groundbreaking event is set to take place at 11:00 a.m. at 1698 NW 3 Avenue in Miami, with Mayor Levine Cava and Commissioner Hardemon, along with key figures like PHCD Director Alex R. Ballina and Housing Trust Group’s Matthew Rieger, in attendance.
