Miami-Dade County Warns Dog Owners of Credit Card Scam Posing as Animal Services

Dog owners in Miami-Dade County should be on high alert as the Miami-Dade County Animal Services Department (Animal Services) has issued a consumer alert regarding a new scam targeting them. Scammers have been reported to call individuals pretending to be from Animal Services and claiming there are outstanding citations that must be immediately settled. These callers are persuasively asking for credit card information over the phone, however, these requests are entirely fraudulent.

It is critical to recognize that true Animal Services representatives do not operate in this manner. “Animal Services does issue civil citations to pet owners for failure to comply with County ordinances or laws,” according to the official

announcement,

“Animal Services DOES NOT make collection calls to individual debtors for citation payments nor does Animal Services accept payments over the phone.” The notice further warns that all credit card payments must to be made in person, suggesting added caution for those receiving such suspicious calls.

The bogus calls have been associated with the number (305) 884-1101, which appears on caller IDs as Miami-Dade Animal Services, but residents should be aware that these calls are not coming from Animal Services. Pet owners in the community can verify citations by searching online or calling the department directly at 786-469-2900, or by emailing inquiries to

. Detailed information and payment for citations that have gone into collections are accessible online at the Credit and Collection section of the department’s website.

For those needing further information on how to properly handle pet citations and to ensure authenticity in their transactions, MiamiDade.Gov/Animals Pet Citations is the official government site to visit. Miami-Dade County Animal Services is a committed organization, annually providing care for over 15,000 animals in distress and facilitating the adoption of these animals into permanent homes. They equally offer vaccinations and sterilization services for roughly 20,000 community cats.
