Miami-Dade Skills Center Renamed in Honor of Local Education Advocates Cipriano and Maria Garza

Commissioner Kionne L. McGhee made a significant move to honor two local heroes, Cipriano and Maria Garza, by renaming the South Dade Skills Center to the Cipriano and Maria Garza Skills Center. The gesture pays homage to the couple’s unwavering commitment to empowering the migrant farmworker community through education and social equity initiatives in Miami-Dade County. The center, situated at 28300 SW 152nd Avenue, serves as a symbol of opportunity and the Garzas’ enduring legacy.

Both Cipriano and Maria Garza, former migrant farmworkers themselves, have been steadfast advocates for educational access and equity. Maria Garza led a labor strike at the tender age of 18 in pursuit of fair wages and systemic change. She later established the Mexican American Council, a nonprofit instrumental in providing educational programs and cultural experiences to farmworker children. According to

Cipriano’s work as the Director of the Migrant Education Program for Miami-Dade County Public Schools has spanned over four decades, crafting initiatives to enhance the educational landscape for the children of migrant families. In addition to his educational endeavors, he established the Everglades Community Association, extending his reach to housing and resources for his community. “Cipriano and Maria Garza have been pillars of our community, embodying the values of education, social equity, and family,” Commissioner McGhee said in a statement obtained by
