DDN – The Miami Police Department detained a 27-year-old man on Thursday in connection with the rape and beating of a 24-year-old woman, who was hospitalized last April.
According to Miami police, the event occurred on April 12, 2024, in the backyard of a Liberty City home on the 900 block of Northwest 55th Street, when the victim was discovered bleeding from the face, severely beaten, and yelling for help. Witnesses reported seeing the victim running back and forth in the yard, bleeding from a broken nose.
Witnesses reported hearing a male voice scream “shut the f— up” and seeing two individuals outside, one holding the victim and the other grabbing her, according to an arrest report.
According to investigators, the victim was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center for surgery to treat injuries such as a fractured nose, wrist, mandible, and lips. They also confirmed that she was intubated and given stitches.
After being asked for a brief statement, police stated that the victim scrawled the word “beaten” on a piece of paper.
Police stated that CCTV evidence corroborated witness testimony, and the victim later gave officers a sworn audio-recorded statement.
According to the investigation, the victim recounted going to the Brick House in Wynwood with a female companion, but after leaving, she fled the car because she felt unwell.
According to police, her buddy drove away after which she awoke to find a younger girl standing over her. Authorities reported that the rape kit findings were positive for seminal fluid, and the woman identified the defendant, Junior Christian Joseph, as a stranger she had never met or had consensual sex with.
Joseph was apprehended by the MPD’s Felony Apprehension Team on December 30 and taken to the Special Victims Unit office for questioning, according to the report.
After being read his Miranda rights, police say Joseph originally requested counsel but subsequently decided to speak with officers without legal assistance.
During the interrogation, officials said Joseph was shown CCTV evidence of a man pulling and slinging a woman over his shoulder, and then carrying her.
According to detectives, Joseph supplied a description of the victim’s attire on the night of the incident, but denied that the sexual intercourse was forced on her and that she was injured.
According to jail records, he is charged with one count of sexual battery causing serious personal injury, aggravated battery with prejudice resulting in grievous bodily harm, and kidnapping.
Joseph was placed on magistrate hold at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on Thursday.
