When her father was unable to transport her to a hair appointment before to her 18th birthday celebration, the young woman killed him by burning him with a deadly substance. The Michigan Court of Appeals refused to reverse the low jail term.
In 2023, 21-year-old Megan Imirowicz received a one-year prison sentence. Since she had previously been detained for about 17 months before to her trial and while she awaited sentencing, she was released right away.
A minimum sentence of just over four years in jail was stipulated in the sentencing guidelines. However, Oakland County Judge Victoria Valentine granted Imirowicz a reprieve, citing her youth, immaturity, and potential for recovery. The prosecution protested.
In a 3-0 ruling on Tuesday, the appeals court stated that “the trial court provided ample justification for the sentence imposed.”
Imirowicz was convicted of utilizing dangerous equipment and irritants that resulted in death. Prosecutors said she was angry with her 64-year-old father, Konrad Imirowicz, for failing to drive her to an appointment prior to her 2021 birthday celebration while intoxicated.
According to the prosecution, Megan Imirowicz severely burned her father’s entire body when she threw lye, a chemical drain cleanser, on him while he was asleep. Before passing away five months later, he required a tracheotomy, kidney dialysis, and the amputation of both legs.
The court of appeals noted, “We acknowledge that the victim’s resulting injuries from the chemical burns, which ultimately led to his death, were severe; however, this fact alone does not demonstrate an abuse of discretion” against the sentencing judge.
During the sentence hearing, Imirowicz stated that the prosecution “tried to make me look like a monster, but that’s not me and never was.”
Her father, she said, was her “best friend.” Probation for Imirowicz ends in July 2028.
