Michigan Inmate Charged with Threatening Terrorism Against Governor Whitmer and Bomb Threat

A Michigan prison inmate has been arraigned on charges of threatening terrorism after allegedly sending a letter that contained threats to the life of Governor Gretchen Whitmer and a plan to bomb her residence upon his release from prison. Jihaad Ahmad, 36, had his arraignment on Monday at the 54-A District Court in Lansing, facing charges that carry a potential 20-year prison sentence and a fine of up to $20,000.

The threats were reportedly made after Ahmad’s request for parole was denied earlier this year. As reported by

, a letter addressed to Governor Whitmer’s office was sent in May of 2024; it was later investigated by the Michigan State Police. Ahmad is presently serving up to 22 years and 6 months for a 2013 robbery conviction in Oakland County and remains incarcerated at the Bellamy Creek Correctional Facility in Ionia.

The Michigan Attorney General’s Office expressed the seriousness of the charges. Attorney General Dana Nessel stated, “Violence and violent rhetoric directed at elected officials pose significant threats to not only them but our democracy as a whole,” as published on the official website of the

Michigan Department of Attorney General

. Nessel underscored her department’s commitment to prosecuting this offense to the fullest extent of the law. Ahmad’s next court appearance is scheduled for November 14, before Judge Cynthia Ward.

According to Department of Corrections records, Ahmad has a history of criminal behavior, including the current charge of False Report or Threat of Terrorism. The AG’s stance reflects a larger concern for the safety of public officials and the stability of governing institutions, both of which are deemed essential for the preservation of democratic principles. As this case progresses, it underscores the ongoing challenge of addressing and deterring threats against elected officials within the parameters of the law.
