Michigan man charged with murder in 2003 death of woman found in Flint River

(CBS DETROIT)Jeanette Wilton, 57, was murdered and sexually assaulted in 2003; her body was discovered in the Flint River. A Michigan man was charged with her crimes on Tuesday.

According to the Michigan Attorney General’s office, Jason Cabello, 47, of Saginaw, was charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct, felony murder, and first-degree premeditated murder. He faces a life sentence if found guilty.

On February 22, 2003, Wilton’s body was discovered close to her Saginaw home. According to the results of an autopsy, Wilton was stabbed several times, strangled, and had blunt force injuries to his face and head.

According to officials, Cabello formerly dated one of Wilton’s relatives.

In 2021, the MSP lab and Western Michigan University’s cold case program assisted Michigan State Police’s Third District Cold Case team in reopening the case and reexamining DNA. Earlier this year, Cabello was connected to the case using DNA.

Attorney General Dana Nessel said in a statement, “With these charges, we are now one step closer to delivering long-awaited justice, but Jeanette’s loved ones have lived without answers for more than a decade.” “I would want to express my gratitude to the Michigan State Police, whose outstanding work enabled this discovery. Their efforts demonstrate that no victim is forgotten and that no case is too cold to be solved.

On December 17, Cabello is expected to appear in court.

If you think you were assaulted by Cabello, please call MSP detective Sgt. Bill Arndt at 989-615-6257 or send an email to [email protected].
