(CBS DETROIT)State Representative Samantha Steckloff proposed House Bill 6062 last month in an attempt to curb price gouging that affects unwary consumers by enacting restrictions. She cited instances of price gouging by certain auto towing companies in Metro Detroit and abroad.
According to Steckloff, the measure’s primary sponsor, a dozen other state lawmakers supported it.
“There are many outstanding towers throughout Michigan that perform an excellent job of responding to mishaps, maintaining the safety of our streets, and helping citizens in need. However, a number of bad actors disrupt an otherwise positive industry and take advantage of people when they are most vulnerable because of a lax regulatory framework,” she said. “This bill aims to fix that.”
Detroit Police Department Commander Michael Parrish, who has spent years addressing towing concerns, and Mitchell D. Myers, Supervising Attorney for CURE Auto Insurance, spoke about the problem on CBS Detroit’s Michigan Matters.
When CURE Auto Insurances first entered the Michigan market two years ago, it saw that some of its clients were being taken advantage of by businesses who charged outrageous rates, according to Myers.
In Lansing and elsewhere, they discussed the bill’s possibilities during the lame-duck session.
After that, the roundtable featuring former Michigan GOP Chair and consultant Susy Avery, Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan Barnett, and Jeff Donofrio, president/CEO of Business Leaders For Michigan, discussed politics and the shocking announcement that Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan would run for governor in 2026 as an independent.
Throughout his entire career, Duggan has run as a Democrat.
They considered Duggan’s prospects, strengths, and potential challenges. They also discussed how his unexpected move would affect other prospective candidates on both sides of the aisle who are thinking about running for governor in the wide-open election. Gretchen Whitmer, the governor, has a term limit.
Donofrio also discussed Michigan’s performance in many categories in the most recent state poll conducted by his organization. He outlined the state’s progress and areas for improvement.
