Michigan nonprofit holds free shopping day for domestic violence survivors

(CBS DETROIT) A local charity organization called On the Wings of Angels offers assistance and resources to victims of domestic abuse.

The group established a “shop” in Troy where survivors could obtain necessities for free, thanks to a resounding amount of community donations.

People like Annette Diamond-Weiler received assistance with their bags from volunteers at the Domestic Survivor Only Free Shopping Day event.

“I had a list of the items I required. Diamond-Weiler stated, “My jacket no longer zipped up, so I needed a winter jacket.”

Diamond-Weiler found what she was looking for with the assistance of a personal shopper.

“The jacket I tried on for the first time fit me beautifully,” Diamond-Weiler remarked.

Gjyzela, a volunteer and survivor of domestic abuse, was that personal shopper.

“Two sets of boots and two winter coats. She received a pair of walking ones for the outdoors and a pair of elegant ones for Christmas. I don’t know, it was simply… It simply makes me happy,” Gjyzela remarked.

It all began with a social media post by the nonprofit’s founder, JoJo Dries.

“That day, I wrote that I was in need of some clothing for a survivor. After that, over 100 people left comments saying, “Hey, we have clothes.” “We’d like to make a donation,” Dries added.

In addition to coats, a warehouse was transformed into a temporary store containing blankets, personal hygiene supplies, children’s items, and much more.

“Even though it happens occasionally, the majority of victims just have their clothes on their backs when they leave that setting. And it’s fantastic to be able to come here, shop safely, and figure out which one to buy,” Gjyzela remarked.

In the future, what started out as a one-day event will continue.

You could come out once a month, which is something we’re even considering doing. You’re witnessing winter. Additionally, we have a whole room filled with spring and summer merchandise,” Dries stated.

Survivors and their kids have all they need to continue on because of the community’s kindness.

“I received everything I needed after going through my list. “I am incredibly grateful to everyone who participated,” Diamond-Weiler remarked.
