Michigan School Superintendent Reacts to Student's Online Threat Arrest 'It's Very Scary'

After being suspected of uploading a picture of a gun in a group chat on social media, a 15-year-old girl from Monroe County’s Whiteford School District was placed under arrest this past weekend.

That adolescent also threatened to shoot up the school, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department.

Scott Huard, the superintendent of the Whiteford Schools District, described it as “very scary.”

Huard claimed to have found out about the purported threat on Saturday. The district was alerted by the teen’s family, and they quickly got in touch with the police.

“I think school districts understand the importance of every threat you have to take seriously so we do have thread assessments,” Huard stated.

Deputies were sent to the teen’s residence, according to Monroe County Undersheriff Jay Hammond, within minutes of receiving word of the purported threat.

According to Hammond, she was placed under arrest and the gun mentioned in the social media post was found.

“If you think this funny, it is not, we don’t take it as a joke,” Hammond stated.

“This was stopped because somebody reported it, and we really asked that you continue to do that. If you see these things, bring it to our attention,” Hammond stated.

In the interest of caution, the Whiteford School District canceled classes on Monday. Huard expressed his sadness that threats of this nature might arise anywhere, but particularly in Monroe County.

“We pride ourselves in knowing our students and our families, and we build relationships with kids, to to the point of knowing that we have somebody that’s hurting this much, that’s big cry for help, and that would potentially come to school and want to harm students and our staff,” Huard stated.

It is anticipated that the district will notify parents via email on Monday evening whether or not classes will resume on Tuesday.
