Michigan Trooper Shoots Suspect in Leg After Pursuit in Washington Township

A pursuit in Washington Township culminates with a Michigan State Police trooper shooting a suspect in the leg.

The incident began on Sunday (March 16) at 3:52 p.m., when a Macomb County Sheriff’s Office officer responded to a “be on the lookout” for a white Jeep Cherokee reportedly involved in a shotgun incident near Shelby Township.

Officials said the Jeep was found at M-53 and 30 Mile Road in Washington Township.

According to police, the MCSO deputy attempted to stop the 31-year-old man from Chesterfield Township with lights and sirens, but he fled.

Other law enforcement agencies, including MSP, helped in the pursuit until the 31-year-old male drove off the road and into a field on the east side of Van Dyke Avenue, north of 34 Mile Road.

According to officials, the man left his vehicle with a long gun in hand, ignoring law police orders to drop the weapon and show his hands. The MSP officer stated that they fired rounds, striking the victim in the leg. He was taken into custody without additional incident.

Police said the man was sent to a Metro Detroit hospital with a non-life-threatening injury.

The MCSO is currently the primary investigating agency for the criminal cases.

Police stated they will file charges with the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office pending the outcome of the continuing investigation.

The MCSO will not investigate the officer-involved shooting; Michigan State Police will handle that inquiry.

“Currently, there is a lot of on-scene work to do. Detectives from the Third District IRT are processing the scene with our forensic laboratory, writing search warrants, and our drone team is mapping the scene,” said F/Lt. Mike Shaw. “The investigation pends interviews with the suspect as well as review of body and vehicle cameras and any other evidence from the area.”
