Michigan woman cooks Thanksgiving dinners for youth in need

Michigan’s Royal Oak (CBS Detroit)For days, a woman from Michigan has been cooking Thanksgiving meals for underprivileged children. According to her, what they need most is a sense of family, not food.

“We just want to embrace the youth here and make them part of a larger family,” stated Barbara Carter, a residential expert at Lighthouse youngsters Sanctuary, a program for homeless and runaway youth.

Lighthouse provides meals, shelter, and basic services. Naturally, Carter prepared a special Thanksgiving feast for the young people in the program.

“While some of the young people are allowed to return home to their families, others are left behind. Additionally, we work to establish a setting that helps children feel comfortable,” she stated.

Since Monday, she has been in the kitchen preparing the lunch, which she described as a labor of love. “But it’s about more than what’s on the plate,” she remarked, referring to any Thanksgiving meal.

“We have a tradition of the youth telling us what they are thankful for on Thanksgiving before we have dinner,” Carter explained.

She claimed that as time went on, the young person came back, appreciating her and Lighthouse.

According to Carter, “It means I’m making a difference,”
