Milwaukee County Invests $3 Million in South Milwaukee’s Affordable Housing on Historic Bucyrus-Erie Site

The historic Bucyrus-Erie site in South Milwaukee will be redeveloped with $3 million from Milwaukee County, creating 171 affordable rental apartments. According to County Executive David Crowley, the cash helps the county achieve its objective of enhancing housing for veterans and working families.

81 affordable housing units for people making $15/hour or less will be part of the Scott Crawford, Inc. project at 1100 Milwaukee Avenue. Veterans making less than 60% of the local median income will be given preference. The $50 million mixed-use project will increase the number of market-rate and affordable dwelling alternatives in South Milwaukee’s downtown and provide redesigned office spaces. According to the County Executive, this initiative is the first time that new affordable housing is being supported with County Community Development Block Grant monies.

Once the scene of industrial activity, the land is currently undergoing a transformation, and Mayor James Shelenske is thankful for the cooperation that enabled the project to proceed. Former Bucyrus-Erie leader Tim Sullivan discussed the site’s transformation into a communal area and its historical significance as a significant employer. According to the County Executive, the Bucyrus Foundation has contributed $10 million to the city’s economic development since 2020, fostering South Milwaukee’s expansion.

“Housing is the main social determinate of health,” Milwaukee County DHHS Housing Services Administrator James Mathy stated in an interview about the relationship between health outcomes and housing access. In order to address historical racial imbalances that have impacted housing access and homeownership in the Milwaukee County suburbs, Crowley’s administration is credited with allocating more than $35 million into affordable housing. According to the County Executive, the completion of this housing project is the result of years of preparation and investment.
