Missing Girl, Mom Discovered After Man's Deathbed Confession

Authorities discovered human remains at a home in southern West Virginia. These remains are believed to belong to a woman and her daughter who went missing almost 24 years ago. Interestingly, the same day the girl’s alleged killer died in prison, the remains were found. State police are investigating the case. During a press conference on Tuesday, officials announced that the suspect confessed to shooting and killing Susan and Natasha “Alex” Carter. The two had been missing for over two decades. The suspect revealed that the motive behind the crime was financial troubles.

Susan Carter and her daughter have not been seen since August 8, 2000. According to a statement from West Virginia State Police Capt. Robert Maddy, members of the state police and the FBI discovered what they believed to be the remains of the victims at the home of the suspect, Larry Webb, on Monday.

Webb, who was in his 80s, had a medical emergency on Monday at the Mount Olive Correctional Complex. He was being held without bond after being arrested earlier this month in connection with the girl’s death. The statement said that Webb was declared dead at a hospital six hours before the remains were found.

When Susan Carter, who was 41 years old, disappeared, she was involved in a difficult custody battle with Natasha’s father. According to an FBI flyer from that time, Susan had told him that he would never see his 10-year-old daughter again. According to news outlets, Carter and her daughter were living in Webb’s house when they disappeared.

The FBI Pittsburgh office announced in December 2021 that they are making a renewed effort to find answers in a case that has been unsolved for many decades. They are also offering a reward for any information. The reward amount was raised from $10,000 to $20,000 in September 2023.

In 2022 and 2023, the police searched Webb’s home with search warrants. Authorities found more evidence related to the investigation during these searches.

During one of his searches, Webb told news outlets that he didn’t know what happened to the girl and didn’t remember when he last saw her. “I can’t recall,” Webb said. “I have a condition called dementia. I am unable to provide an exact answer.

Raleigh County Prosecutor Ben Hatfield told WVNS-TV that Webb apparently realized there were problems with his finances, which led to a violent domestic situation.

According to officials, he shot Susan Carter because he believed she had spent a lot of money and thought she was responsible for money that had gone missing. This information was reported by CBS affiliate WOWK-TV. Authorities said Webb shot and killed her daughter in order to avoid being caught for killing Susan Carter.

According to WVVA-TV, Webb was accused of murder in October for the girl’s disappearance and was kept at a medical facility. According to Hatfield, he was arrested on April 12 after being given permission to be put in jail.
