STONE COUNTY, Mo. (DDN) – A bus ran off the side of the road at Reeds Spring, injuring eight adolescent girls and several adults.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP), the incident occurred on Highway 160, one mile east of Reeds Spring, at 6:28 p.m. on January 21.
Forsyth Superintendent Jeff Mingus said the squad was on its way to a competition in Spokane when the accident occurred.
Mingus claims the driver drove off the right side of the road to avoid a deer, colliding with a driveway and bouncing the back of the bus.
Mingus said that 14 of the 21 passengers on board were hospitalized with minor injuries. One pupil is still in the hospital with shattered ribs and a punctured lung, he stated.
“We’re just appreciative no kids were injured any worse than they were, and we were glad that our driver was able to maintain control of the bus and get everything pulled over so we could make sure everyone is ok,” Mingus told reporters. “It’s an unfortunate incident, we’re just glad no kids were injured more than they were.”
Mingus further stated that the driver did everything she could and that the bus would be put back into service once repairs were completed. The injured students will be able to cheer once they have healed and recovered.
