Montgomery County residents can prepare for a few adjustments to their routines due to the Thanksgiving holiday schedule. County officials have announced closures and program changes for Thursday, Nov. 28, and Friday, Nov. 29, affecting various services, including county offices, state courts, and public transportation.
According to the officialMontgomery County Government announcement, county offices, MC 311, state offices and courts, as well as the State Motor Vehicle Administration offices and Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program stations, will be closed on Nov. 28. Libraries, Alcohol Beverage Services stores, and the Department of Permitting Services will also take a day off. Public parking garages, lots, and curbside meters will provide free parking on Thanksgiving Day a welcome reprieve for residents and visitors alike.
Public transportation is set to operate on a holiday schedule, with the Ride OnBus Service and extRa Pink and extRa Lime following a Sunday schedule, and the MARC Train suspending service on all lines on Thanksgiving Day. On the following day, Nov. 29, MARC’s Penn Line will be the only line operating, and that on a Saturday schedule. Meanwhile, Metrorail and Metrobus services will also be reduced, with details and updates available on their respective websites.
The county’s trash and recycling collections won’t be making their rounds on Thanksgiving Day, inevitably sliding the remaining trash service schedule by one day, culminating on Saturday, Nov. 30. If residents wish to engage in outdoor activities, Montgomery Parks has extended its Open Parkways program. This adjustment means that select roadways, such as Beach Drive and Sligo Creek Parkway, will be closed to vehicles but open for pedestrians and cyclists a measure that both eases congestion and encourages healthy recreation over the holiday weekend. Recreation Centers and Aquatic Centers will observe closures on Thanksgiving Day, but aquatic enthusiasts can dive back in on the following day, as perMontgomery County Government.
While many indoor facilities take a brief respite, the great outdoors remains welcoming, with parks, trails, gardens, and a plethora of outdoor recreational areas remaining accessible on Nov. 28. Residents can still enjoy the inline hockey rink at Ridge Road Recreation Park, picnic shelters, and the Little Bennett campground to name a few. However, those looking forward to the Garden Lights at Brookside Gardens will need to plan around the holiday as it will be closed from Nov. 25-28.
