County Executive Marc Elrich stressed the significance of appropriate battery disposal in an effort to make recycling safe and effective, stating, “Batteries are vital to our everyday lives, powering everything from cell phones to electric and gas vehicles. When their useful life is coming to an end, they need to be treated properly. According to the Montgomery County government website, “proper battery recycling supports our environmental goals and protects our neighborhoods from potential hazards.”
In order to prevent fire hazards, Montgomery County homeowners are advised to dispose of their used batteries at the Shady Grove Transfer Station or other authorized recycling locations rather than in curbside recycling bins. Echoing the County Executive’s concerns, DEP Director Jon Monger underlined the significance of proper disposal in order to avoid fires in processing facilities and recycling vehicles.
The Shady Grove Transfer Station, situated at 16101 Frederick Road in Derwood, is where locals may dispose of their spent batteries. The following easy safety measures are advised by the Department of Environmental Protection: Put each battery in a different plastic bag, tape the terminals of each battery with non-metallic tape, and keep the bags in a strong container with a label. Additionally, to avoid unintentional discharge, do not carry loose batteries with metal things like coins or keys.
“Our fire and rescue teams have responded to numerous incidents stemming from batteries that were thrown away in regular trash or recycling bins,” said Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Chief Corey Smedley, who also highlighted the dangers of improper battery disposal. As a result, residents must follow safe disposal procedures immediately for the community’s overall well-being.
