DDN – One Lee County student has died, and a 19-year-old has been arrested for fleeing deputies on a motorcycle.
According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO), just after 1 a.m. on Jan. 1, a deputy saw a motorbike going at an unsafe pace in the 1700 block of Philema Road. The deputy attempted to start a traffic stop, but the motorist speeded. A pursuit began at speeds exceeding 90 miles per hour.
The motorcycle collided with a trashcan in the 800 block of Forrester Parkway around 1:20 a.m. Both the driver and the passenger were thrown from the bike.
The driver, later identified as Michael Evans, 19, had minor injuries and was arrested shortly after receiving treatment. Makenzie Jackson, an 18-year-old Lee County student, was transferred to Phoebe Putney after suffering significant injuries. Martavius Marcus, Lee County Deputy Coroner, pronounced her dead at the hospital about 8 a.m.
According to the incident report, the two were not wearing helmets when they crashed.
According to the LCSO, Evans is being held at the Lee County Jail. LCSO Chief Deputy Lewis Harris informed WALB that Evans is also facing a plethora of charges from the Georgia State Patrol, including
Possible offenses include vehicular murder, DUI, and failure to maintain lanes.
The Georgia State Patrol and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the event.
