MSU trustees approve $28 million in upgrades for Spartan Stadium

(CBS DETROIT)The Board of Trustees at Michigan State University approved $28 million for Spartan Stadium enhancements and renovations on Friday.

Both short-term and long-term projects are included in the authorized plan, which starts with the 2025 replacement of the stadium’s three videoboards. It is anticipated that the project will begin in January and be finished in time for the 2025 season.

In a news release, MSU Vice President and Director of Athletics Alan Haller stated, “Spartan Stadium has been a gathering place for the Michigan State community for more than 100 years.” “Today’s action by the Board is a step towards ensuring that remains a constant for the next 100 years.”

Renovations to the stadium’s west tower’s fourth, seventh, and eighth levels will also start in January. It is anticipated that concessions, flooring, and seating will be updated, and ADA-compliant restrooms will be installed. It is anticipated that construction will be finished in August.

“Fans will benefit from the upgrades as soon as next season as the video boards are key to continuing to provide an enjoyable gameday experience for all in attendance,” Haller stated. “The improvements in the West Tower, the first major upgrades since opening in 2005, will provide a modern space for both Athletics and the University to host events, donors, and dignitaries.”

The stadium, which opened in 1923 and can accommodate up to 75,000 people, will also be updated by the institution. Concessions, restrooms, seats, concourses, and other safety and security measures are all part of those plans.

“The approval to plan for Spartan Stadium modernization demonstrates the Board’s and administration’s commitment to supporting the football program,” Haller stated. “This is a fascinating time to rethink what the future can bring. In addition to offering new seating options and an enhanced fan experience, a new East Tower will significantly alter the stadium’s appearance and feel. It also presents a chance to create a place in the center of campus that might support the university’s outreach, academic, and research goals.
