Multi-vehicle Collision in Downtown San Francisco Leaves One Dead, Several Injured, Roads Closed

DDN – According to police, a multiple-vehicle disaster in San Francisco’s SoMa area on Sunday killed one person and a dog and may have been linked to previous hit-and-run collisions on Interstate 280. A representative for the fire service confirmed that seven persons were hurt.

At approximately 6:08 p.m., a line of automobiles, including a Waymo, were waiting at a signal when they were hit from behind by a fast vehicle. The suspect car was alleged to be speeding at around 98 mph.

Police discovered at least six damaged automobiles. Several injured individuals were taken to the hospital, while others were treated and released on the spot, according to a police spokesperson.

Officers seized a suspect who was receiving medical treatment at a hospital. Investigators are looking into whether drugs or alcohol were involved in the incident.

The San Francisco Police Department is collaborating with the California Highway Patrol to establish whether the incident is linked to a series of hit-and-run accidents recorded seconds earlier on northbound I-280.

The victims’ and suspect’s identities have yet to be released by authorities.

“An unoccupied Waymo vehicle operating autonomously was in a line of stand-still traffic when it was struck from behind by a vehicle that was impacted by another vehicle traveling at an extreme rate of speed,” according to an email sent by a Waymo spokeswoman. “The trust and safety of our community remain our top priority, and we are coordinating with local safety officials.”

Mayor Daniel Lurie stated the crash and death at 8:48 p.m.

“I’ve been briefed on the multi-vehicle incident that happened downtown this evening. It is a tragedy to lose someone on our streets, and our sympathies are with everyone who has been affected, including their families. “
