Commuters in Monroe County experienced major delays this morning as multiple crashes on I-75 led to closures in several areas, causing widespread traffic congestion.
WXYZ News Detroit
reported that northbound I-75 was closed at S. Huron River Dr. in South Rockwood due to a crash involving a flatbed semi. Congestion intensified as Michigan State Police and Monroe County sheriff’s deputies responded to another accident further downriver, necessitating the shutdown of northbound I-75 at mile marker 26, causing significant delays.
On top of the initial incident,
ClickOnDetroit
noted that there was another closure on northbound I-75 near Swan Creek Road, with the Michigan Department of Transportation reporting this just before 6 a.m. The southbound side was also affected, as two left lanes near Huron River Drive were shut down while, according to a report, it’s unclear if any injuries occurred.
Moreover,
FOX 2 Detroit
added to the narrative of disruption, documenting that all lanes of northbound I-75 at Swan Creek Road were closed; police had begun turning traffic onto the southbound freeway. An ambulance was spotted at the scene of what appeared to involve a motorcycle, though the extent of any injuries has not been disclosed. The chaos was further compounded by subsequent crashes on the northbound side south of the original scene.
The series of incidents on the freeway continued as crews worked to free a driver after metal rods pierced the cab of a truck in another crash near the I-275 exit. Beginning around 7 a.m., the cause of the crash remained unclear, while the aftermath of the truck’s collision with its cargo led to significant traffic delays, with a buildup of vehicles across I-75.
As authorities worked to manage the situation and clear the roadway, alternate routes became congested. Drivers were advised to seek other options for their morning commutes, while officers and first responders worked to restore normal conditions on the highways of Monroe County.
